What to Look for in a Wound Care App at the Bedside

A practical checklist for clinicians choosing a wound care app: measurement, imaging, charting, and cost, and how to tell a bolted-on feature from a unified workflow.

A wound care app lives or dies at the bedside. If it slows the visit, adds steps, or forces you to finish charting after clinic, it will not stick. Every app now says it has AI, so the useful question is where the AI sits in your workflow and what it is built to achieve.

This checklist is written for clinicians, podiatrists, and nurses who document and image wounds on a phone or tablet.

Start with the visit, not the feature list

Walk through one real visit and note each place you touch the app:

  • Capturing a wound photo
  • Measuring the wound
  • Writing the assessment and plan
  • Coding and signing the chart

If each step needs a different tool, or a separate login, the app is a set of point solutions rather than one workflow.

Measurement: tape and marker, or markerless

Tape-and-marker measurement is still common in basic setups. It works, but it adds handling at the bedside and depends on how each person places the tape. A markerless measurement approach lets you point, capture, and measure from the image itself. When you evaluate an AI wound measurement app, ask whether measurement happens in the same capture flow as the photo, or in a separate step.

Imaging and scribing should be built in

Specialized imaging and third-party scribing can both be strong on their own. The weakness is the seams between them: another subscription, another export, another place for data to get stuck. Look for imaging and an ambient scribe that are native to the app. You can see how this is approached in AI-powered wound imaging and the AI scribe for wound care.

Three levels of wound care tool

A simple way to sort what you see in the market:

LevelWhat it looks like
Me tooPaid EMR priced per seat, tape-and-marker measurement, AI add-ons
DifferentiatedSpecialized imaging and third-party scribing, still bolted on
Unique technologyUnified multi-agent AI across the visit

The top level is where the real change begins: AI that predicts treatment effects, optimizes workflow, unlocks revenue, and reduces compliance risk. The overview of AI in wound care software walks through this pyramid in more detail.

Ask about cost structure

Per-seat pricing means every nurse, podiatrist, and covering clinician adds to the bill. Ask whether the EMR is free, whether seats are unlimited, and what you actually pay for. In the model described by the parent platform, the EMR is free with unlimited seats and you pay only when agents draft a chart.

Judge it by the wound, not the line

The most important test is clinical. A good app should help you see whether each wound is healing, stalling, or worsening, instead of only recording what goes on the measurement line. Scribing, imaging, charting, and coding should all serve one result: a wound that heals.

In practice, that means a visit where multiple AI agents work alongside you and draft a chart in about five minutes, which you then review and sign. The clinical judgment stays with you.

Quick evaluation questions

  1. Can I capture, measure, and chart without leaving the app?
  2. Is measurement markerless?
  3. Are imaging and scribing native, or bolted on?
  4. Do I pay per seat?
  5. Does it show healing, stalling, or worsening for each wound?
